FLIPPING SCRIPTS
The films we consume often follow familiar tropes, with male protagonists like those in Kabir Singh, Pushpa, or Singham portrayed as one-man armies or deeply misogynistic figures. That’s why it’s refreshing and necessary when cinema spotlights complex, remarkable female leads. Films like English Vinglish, Queen, Mary Kom, Raazi, Thappad, Neerja, Pink, Lipstick Under My Burkha, and Piku are more than exceptions – they’re essential in reshaping narratives and redefining how women are portrayed on screen.
For every piece of pop culture steeped in misogyny, there is hopeful representation where women are no longer relegated to the sidelines. Instead, they’re claiming their place, owning the screen, and driving stories forward. A growing movement of trailblazing women – writers, directors, and actors – is powering independent filmmaking, bringing authentic, resonant, and captivating stories to the forefront.
Recognising the media’s significant role in shaping public consciousness, Akshara Centre has been actively engaging with the advertising and film industries. In 2022, we launched the #GenderRewrite campaign to encourage audiences and creators to seek out positive gender portrayals in the mass media. The campaign received 612 entries from 29 organisations across India. It showcased 10 gender-positive films, which featured on Disney+ Hotstar during International Women’s Month, encouraging meaningful conversations on gender equality.
The #GenderRewrite campaign highlights how stereotypical representations of women often originate from behind-the-scenes decisions, calling on creators, professionals, and audiences to celebrate real women and dismantle outdated norms. As it gains momentum, #GenderRewrite urges the industry to embrace inclusive and authentic portrayals of women.
