Bollywood Can Change!!
ACHIEVEMENTS
We think we have touched the right chord from the overall response we got for the #gaanarewrite competition. Through our partners OBR India, EKSAATH Campaign and Girls Count we were able to take it at national level platforms and reach out to nooks and corner of our country and the response was the same where “we too feel offended by the sexism in Bollywood especially in the songs.
We could not have asked for a better platform like Kala Ghoda Arts festival to celebrate the culmination of our campaign and release of 6 videos.
Akshara used digital and on-ground events to mobilize around the issue of normalization of sexism and simultaneously through this emphasizing on women’s freedom and an assertion of gender equality! Workshops were attended by many and everyone ended up thinking about many songs and looked at prevalent sexism in some of them
The six videos that we launch at the end of the competition presented woman singing and asking Lyricist’ Eisa kyu nahi Likhate” giving them alterative lyrics to the sexist ones. Video shows different versions of popular songs and questioning everyday harassment meted out at various public places. Online magazine like, The Logical Indian, Ladies finger, and many others shared the compiled videos and gave it a wider viewership, all the while extending wholehearted support to the cause.
What was it about!!
“Chammak Challo”
“Ab karunga tere saath gandi baat”
“Tu cheez badi hai mast”
On screen, when these lyrics are sung, they make a happy picture of song and dance, being idolized by millions. But when they’re sung for a girl walking back home through a deserted alleyway, they become weapons for sexual harassment. In the interactive workshops that we hold with the youth, many shared similar personal experiences.
“My name is Sheila and when the song ‘Sheila ki jawani’ came out, it was annoying that many people, including my own friends, started teasing me about it.”
How could we put an end to this?
By calling upon people to re-write their own version of sexist Bollywood songs
By doing this you’re making it clear that you resist such songs and reach out to the masses with the issue of sexism in Bollywood!!
